Rising sharply from the plains of southern Albania to an altitude of 2416 meters, Mount Tomorr dominates the horizon south-west of Berat. The mountain is not only a dramatic karst landscape of cliffs, caves, and alpine meadows, it is also deeply sacred. Every August, thousands of pilgrims from the Bektashi order make their way to the tomb of Abaz Aliu, located at the summit. The mountain is protected as a national park, preserving its diverse ecosystem and cultural heritage. This hike follows the same route used by the pilgrims, leading you through spiritually and scenically rich trails toward the Kulmak Summit, a major high point on Tomorr’s long ridgeline.
The hike begins near the Tekke of Abaz Aliu, a religious site and symbolic starting point for many of the mountain’s pilgrim journeys. From here, the trail climbs gradually but steadily along the flanks of the mountain. The first 150m of the ascent follow a trail that goes in Southern direction, and then turns to the North-West. As the ascent continues, the trail reaches a wide ridgeline. From here, the landscape becomes more open, and the views stretch far across the valley toward Berat and the Osum River basin. The route continues in the same direction, and follows the ridge, climbing steadily toward the summit of Kulmak, which stands at around 2379 meters above sea level.
While this isn’t the highest peak of Mount Tomorr (which lies further North), Kulmak is one of its most accessible high points, and the views from the top are extraordinary. The ridgelines roll out to the horizon, with white limestone crags, pine clusters, and deep valleys shaping the panorama.
After a well-earned rest at the top, you will descend by the same trail, retracing your steps back down toward the starting point at the base.

Hiking Time, Grade and Technical Difficulty:
Our tour descriptions give detailed information about terrain, technical difficulty, estimated activity times, ascent/descent in meters and distance in kilometres. We kindly ask you to read these very carefully and consider them while choosing your tour.
The estimated difficulty of hikes is given in the SAC scale, starting from T1 to T6. These grades are guidelines that must always be used in conjunction with your own experience, intuition and careful judgment. Explanations for the difficulty scale can be found here.
Estimated hiking times are given for each day. These times do vary according to the day’s weather conditions and your fitness levels. These times do not include times taken for meals and breaks. The hiking times are all calculated in accordance with the Albanian national standard for hiking trails, which is based on the Swiss Alpine Club adaptation of the DIN44366 standard.
