Tucked into the high plains of southeastern Albania, Voskopoja is not only a tranquil mountain village but a living museum of Balkan history. Once a flourishing center of trade and Orthodox learning, this former metropolis housed printing presses, an academy, and over twenty churches. Today, its cobblestone streets and preserved frescoed churches offer a window into a once-glorious past.

Your hike begins in the heart of Voskopoja, following a gentle riverside trail that gradually transitions to a gravel path. The ascent is steady and scenic, meandering through a wide valley flanked by forested slopes and grazing meadows. As you approach the village of Shipskë, you’ll be greeted by traditional stone homes and pastures, that will give you a glimpse into Albania’s rural life.
The return leg dips through thick forest and crosses quiet clearings and a small stream, offering varied terrain and shaded stretches, all the way back to Voskopoja.

This trail starts and ends at the village of Voskopojë. You have to drive to the starting point of the hike yourself. Free parking is available nearby.

While most hiking trails are signed, some markings may be unclear or difficult to see. Certain sections might not be well-marked, and poor weather can make navigation more challenging. Good navigation skills are necessary to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Estimated hiking times are given for each day. These times do vary according to the day’s weather conditions and your fitness levels. These times do not include times taken for meals and breaks. The hiking times are all calculated in accordance with the Albanian national standard for hiking trails, which is based on the Swiss Alpine Club adaptation of the DIN44366 standard.
