Just North-East of Tirana, not too far from the bustling capital, lies a wild corner of the Dajti Mountain National Park. Here, forests meet sheer cliffs and the glassy surface of the Bovilla Reservoir below. This hike takes you high above the lake, to one of the region’s most rewarding and less-trodden viewpoints: Maja e Gamtit.

The hike begins from the remote hillside village of Ranzë, perched on the western rim of the Bovilla basin. The path climbs gradually through shrubs and forest and opens up to steep switchbacks with rising views of the reservoir. This area, rugged and remote, offers a sense of true wilderness just a short drive from Tirana.
The trail culminates at Maja e Gamtit, at 1207 meters above sea level. There, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the deep turquoise waters of the Bovilla Reservoir and the hazy outlines of Tirana in the distance.
After soaking in the scenery, the descent follows the same trail back to Ranzë.

This trail starts and ends in Bovillë. You have to drive to the starting point of the hike yourself. Parking is available nearby. A high ground clearance 4×4 vehicle is required to reach the starting location of this tour.

While most hiking trails are signed, some markings may be unclear or difficult to see. Certain sections might not be well-marked, and poor weather can make navigation more challenging. Good navigation skills are necessary to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Estimated hiking times are given for each day. These times do vary according to the day’s weather conditions and your fitness levels. These times do not include times taken for meals and breaks. The hiking times are all calculated in accordance with the Albanian national standard for hiking trails, which is based on the Swiss Alpine Club adaptation of the DIN44366 standard.

Transportation:
Transportation is not included in this tour. You will need to travel in your own or a rented vehicle. A high ground clearance 4×4 vehicle is required to reach the starting location of this tour.
