– Venture deep into the forgotten borderlands on one of Albania’s most remote ridgeline hikes
– Catch sight of distant Corfu, the Greek coastline, and the Drinos Valley from the Bureto Summit
– See the ruins of Albania’s isolation-era bunkers: quiet reminders of the past
– A one-of-a-kind self-guided journey that fuses nature, history, and solitude
Bureto Mountain, reaching 1763 meters above sea level, is located close to the Albanian-Greek border. It is defined by its wide limestone ridge and unique karst terrain, complete with natural sinkholes and pits. Formerly a military zone, remnants of Albania’s isolation-era fortifications are still visible across the mountaintop. The summit rewards hikers with far-reaching views over the Drinos Valley, the historic city of Gjirokastra, and, in clear weather, even to the Greek coastline and Corfu Island.
This full-day adventure begins in the village of Labovë e Kryqit, known for its historical church and tranquil setting.
The trail initially follows an old military gravel road that steadily climbs through mixed terrain: scrub, grassland, and rocky outcrops.
As you reach 1500m altitude, the trail transitions into a high ridge path. Here, karst formations begin to dominate the landscape: deep limestone funnels, scattered sinkholes, and rugged plateaus marked by sparse vegetation. Remnants of Albania’s military past appear subtly in the landscape: concrete bunkers and abandoned outposts now slowly reclaimed by nature.
Upon reaching the summit at 1763 meters, a vast open ridge stretches before you.
The hike follows the same trail back down, offering a chance to appreciate the varied landscape from a different angle.

Hiking Time, Grade and Technical Difficulty:
Our tour descriptions give detailed information about terrain, technical difficulty, estimated activity times, ascent/descent in meters and distance in kilometres. We kindly ask you to read these very carefully and consider them while choosing your tour.
The estimated difficulty of hikes is given in the SAC scale, starting from T1 to T6. These grades are guidelines that must always be used in conjunction with your own experience, intuition and careful judgment. Explanations for the difficulty scale can be found here.
Estimated hiking times are given for each day. These times do vary according to the day’s weather conditions and your fitness levels. These times do not include times taken for meals and breaks. The hiking times are all calculated in accordance with the Albanian national standard for hiking trails, which is based on the Swiss Alpine Club adaptation of the DIN44366 standard.
